Biological Sciences Libraries

The Zoology Library is open but with reduced capacity to keep users safe. Study spaces are available to Natural Sciences Tripos undergraduates, and current staff and postgraduates of the Zoology Department. Please be aware during busy times, study space may not be available. Read the Using the Library section before visiting, which includes opening times and COVID safety information. Some zero-contact services are available, and the Senior Library Assistant can be contacted via email

Using the Library

The Library will be open from 8:30am-5:00pm Monday-Thursday, 8:30am-4:30pm Friday to the categories of user listed above. Alternative study spaces are available at the University Library, the Moore Library, or your college library. If you need to consult an item that cannot be borrowed, you should arrange an appointment in advance with the Senior Library Assistant.

Face coverings must be worn when moving around the Library, unless you have a medical exemption.

Please clean your desks before and after use with the spray and paper towels provided at the cleaning stations and regularly use the hand sanitiser.

Please do not come to the Library if you have any symptoms of COVID-19 and consider taking a test through the University's provision:

Windows must be open to aid ventilation so consider wearing extra layers for your comfort while working in the Library.

The multi-function device (MFD) for printing, scanning, and copying is available. If the MFD is in use, the alternative MFD in the Computing Suite on the 2nd floor can be used instead. Hand sanitiser is provided next to the machine to clean hands before and after use.

The self-issue machine for borrowing and returning books is available. Hand sanitiser is provided next to the machine to clean hands before and after use.

Browsing is permitted but users must be considerate of others as social distancing is strongly encouraged. Users should consult the iDiscover catalogue first to identify items and minimise unnecessary handling of items they don't need.

The Electronic Legal Deposit terminal is currently located in the Library Office. Please contact the Senior Library Assistant to arrange an appointment to use it.

Click & Collect

Click & Collect enables current staff and students to request books to be retrieved and borrowed from the Zoology Library's modern collections. Undergraduates can borrow up to four books at any one time. Postgraduates and University staff (academic staff, research workers, support staff) can borrow up to 12 books at any one time. All books, including overnight loans, will be auto renewed until they are returned, requested by another reader, or your borrower record expires. Journals, special collection and reference items cannot be borrowed.

You should check the iDiscover catalogue to see if the book is held in the Zoology Library and then place a request via the online form. Requests will be fetched from the shelves when the library staff are on site. Once the books are retrieved, you will receive a confirmation email which includes information about how to collect your books from the Zoology Department Reception desk. The books for collection will have been issued to your library borrower record and will be placed in a paper bag for you to take away. Please do not come to collect your books until you receive the confirmation email.

Book returns

You can return books on loan from the Zoology Library to the Zoology Department Reception desk during opening hours (8:30am-4:30pm Monday-Friday). Library staff will collect returned books from Reception when they are on site and remove them from the borrower’s record. Books should be automatically renewed but there are no fines if items are overdue. Books from other libraries cannot be returned to the Zoology Department.

*You must wear a face covering when you enter the building and return your books, unless you have a medical exemption*

Scan & Deliver

Scan & Deliver allows current staff and students to request an individual scanned copy of one chapter (or 5%) of a monograph or one article per issue of a journal from the University Library; some faculty and departmental libraries' modern collections; the Library Storage Facility; and material held as Electronic Legal Deposit, subject to relevant conservation approval and copyright permissions. For more information and to make a request, see the University Library's Scan & Deliver webpage.

All requests for items for private study and research must be made through the University Library. Individual requests to the Zoology Library will not be accepted due to the regulations for providing scans. If the University Library is unable to fulfil a request as the item is only held by the Zoology Library, they will ask library staff to send a scanned copy to them.

Scans for teaching, including those to be uploaded to Moodle, must not be requested. Lecturers must contact the Senior Library Assistant to arrange these.

Online meetings and 1:1 support

Online meetings can be booked directly with the Senior Library Assistant, using Microsoft Teams or Zoom.

The Biological Sciences Libraries are offering online 1:1 support using Microsoft Teams or Zoom. To request this please use the online form. We can provide you with guidance on finding online resources effectively, including database searching, e-books and Open Access resources.
